Hurricane Sandy Leaves Gym Power Still Out
Published: Thu, 11/01/12
My gym is still without power...
Not the place I workout but the place I work.
4 days down so far - and not looking good for tomorrow.
I got power back at my house last night and cable and internet back today. I'm all coffee'd out too from sitting at local coffe shops near the gym waiting for the power to come back. Also had to throw out all the food in the fridge at home and just filled it over the weekend too.
I have a staff of 10 that work the gym are not making any money this week and 4 of them are trainers that haven't been about to train any clients.
Now, the hurricane is horrible and really wrecked people's homes throughout New Jersey and New York. But for me I just saw a few trees fall over...
I was finally able to see some of the massive damage on television even as close as Fairfield and Milford, CT to homes near the water.
Last year we had a 8 days without power at my house but the gym was good and we opened our showers to locals who had no water at their houses due to well water. It was a nice public thing we tried to do even though we had a horrible week of business and this time we have to lights at the gym so we can't even do that.
It's hard not to be upset over losing work and employees losing pay and waiting on the electric company to turn our power back on - the staff keeps texting me and asking what the status is on getting power back. All I can say is - "I don't know".
Thing is being a gym operator weather causes many closed days and days of no sales - from snow storms, ice storms, and now losing power from hurricanes. Heck, even holidays can throw off a week of membership or client training days.
I'm lucky that I have other means of income besides just training clients like most of the trainers I know. They go paycheck to paycheck always dependent on how many clients they see each week.
There are trainers now losing money daily on the storm - money lost that they can't make up.
I can't talk enough to trainers about the importance of having an additional online business that isn't dependent on always seeing clients face-to-face and going workout to workout. Even if it's as simple as a blog about them with some Google ads or a YouTube partner channel simple marketing stuff for their business that can make some residual income on the side.
Trainers and gym owners need to look for other means of having income from selling ebooks, membership sites, online training, anything that allows them to have a larger reach than just their local market.
If you are a trainer and the weather has hurt your business or you just want to know a little about blogging and online books reply to this email and I can send you some links to stuff I read and use on my website.
Hopefully I can help you out,
Brian
PS, I'll be at the Rhode Island WBFF Show this weekend and look forward to seeing the athletes there.
