Have you been thinking about entering a show and starting to prepare?
First thing is you start looking at yourself in the mirror and try hitting some
poses in a little bathroom mirror only seeing your upper body.
You may think to yourself, Can I really do this?
There are a few different types of people that compete in shows and many
times there are a couple things holding people back from entering.
First you may have the first-time contestant who just isn't sure if they are good enough and second you have the person who competed before and is now thinking and asking themselves if they are good enough to win.
Once people get past actually committing to entering a show they start practicing their posing.
Then worst place for practicing is at the gym in the group exercise room and seeing all the
heads of members peaking around the corner looking in as they wonder what you are doing... if you are posing in an area at your gym it is likely people will ask you questions.
If you are posing in a big gym some members love to ask you popular questions...
"What federation are you entering?"
Personally I wish all people asked what type of venue is your show being held because some shows just have a low budget and can't afford to put on really nice show. Regardless of federation each show will draw a certain number of
competitors and each promoter runs a show a different way.
One of the first shows I started running was known as a Novice Show and it was at a high school auditorium and my posters for the show looked like Chinese food menus. I was 22 years old and had no budget to operate a show the way I do today.
It was a fun show and was called the Milford County and almost all of the contestants were male and each had to bring a cassette tape of the song they posed to for a minute. The stage was minimal, the DJ was some local person, and we had statue trophies. Some people only know of these types of shows.
My goal is to give back more and more with
better production each and every year. I want to take the show to the very best level of production. I know the work it takes to enter and want to give you the best venue and production to show off your hard work.
"You need to eat more of this or that..."
Why do people tell you what to eat without knowing your current diet or calorie expenditure? To write someone a meal plan isn't just throwing out food types. EAT MORE CHICKEN out of nowhere CUT YOUR CARBS just throwing out words.
"What are you taking?"
Always referring to drugs like everyone who competes is on steroids. They think they are being helpful and they are not bad people they just don't know how some contests have changed over the years. One major difference in shows from years ago is now the girls took over. I noticed for years once Bikini Divisions started the girls classes started to blow up and
shows are now three times girls to guys. I don't care which show you attend count the women to men.
You also need to work with trainers and coaches who understand the type of event that truly is best for you. Trainers who understand all of the shows and don't just try to place people in shows for titles. Many trainers only focus on
the titles. At the end of the day you want to put yourself on a nice stage and have fun with a great time for your family, friends to attend.
How long has your trainer been involved and how passionate are they?
The person in the photo below is Tiffany Larson. Tiffany does hair and make up with her team for Fitness Atlantic but also has been entering shows for years now.
Tiffany worked her way to win Fitness Atlantic and competed at Worlds and won a Pro Title. She didn't do all that in one year and stop.
Some people make these events part of their lives and get to enjoy the process.
You have to put the time in and enjoy it at the same time.
