Why does the word "fat" offend righteous people... (read here)

Published: Sat, 04/25/15

I should have saw this one coming but it got past me.

Sometimes on Facebook I share things that I think are motivational but non-fitness community somehow sees the images and writes their opinions without reading too much of the text.

They react very quickly without knowing all of the information.

And well, the word FAT really offends people. It gets them really fired up fast.

I guess it is because they think "fat" only means obese and unhealthy but even that these commenters would rather see someone to what they call NORMAL than someone really in shape and fit looking.

If you are TOO FIT the self-righteous people say it's unhealthy and an eating disorder.

The thing is on this Facebook post I only saw the first few comments and then it moves down the thread and I don't ever see it again and it all started when some woman wrote this:

"She calls herself fat in the first photo. How incredibly sad."

It only takes one person to fire everyone up.

When I finally found it I had to Ban and Delete a whole bunch of people who are not even fans of the page in the first page they also have zero interest in "fitness" anyway.

Alyssa - Transformation
"Exactly 1 year has passed between these two photos: on the left was April 11, 2014, the day I made the decision to transform my lifestyle and become a healthier, happier version of myself. I committed right then and there and haven't looked back since. On the right was last weekend, April 11, 2015 at the The WBFF Fitness Atlantic where I placed 7th in my second fitness competition. Not only did I completely change my body but as you can see from the expressions on my face in each picture, I've also changed my mindset, attitude and perspective of myself. Before, I was fat, unmotivated, unhealthy, unhappy with what I saw in the mirror, didn't like the way clothes looked on me, never had energy, ate junk constantly, and felt like junk constantly. I wanted to LOVE what I saw in the mirror! I wanted to feel good from the inside out. So I made a change - no ifs, ands, or buts about it! It wasn't easy, it still isn't and it never will be, if it was everyone would do it! Living a fit life is a full time job that requires constant dedication to your goals and an never ending drive to be better than yesterday. If you just make the commitment to yourself and your health you WILL get the results you want. Set a goal and go after it."

Obviously Alyssa isn't the definition of the word "fat" in the photo on the left and it set people off and the right photo she was in Diva Fitness Model and having abs is pretty awesome!  That is just how she felt and the commenters have NO IDEA she was in a fitness show and just off the stage.

Alyssa's friend then posted
"WHAT SUSIE SAYS OF SALLY SAYS MORE OF SUSIE THAN OF SALLY.

I thought that was really deep and very true but of course the haters and negative commenters won't understand and in a way they think they are saying the right thing.

This had me thinking about an article I read this week from an author who said;
Why We All Have Haters, And Why I Respect Mine.

In his article he wrote about people watching one of his videos and not liking the sound of his voice or how he looked or his confidence but to that he said his goal is to eventually he will win them over because he will keep going and eventually when they read something he wrote (even if it is years down the road in 2023) they will finally get it and they will respect what he is saying.

He said "If you don't like me that's on me. It's on me to create more narratives and content for you to see what I am actually like. Situations dictate behaviors and we all have haters." His point was to love them and try to win them over.

I really don't think we should stop posting photos and stories and hope that the comments didn't bother Alyssa too much.

Now here is another post below that didn't have anyone stirring up negativity.

This is really good stuff so please keep sharing and if haters comment let's try not to let it get to us and bring us down as well. It is upsetting and no reason for people to be so self-righteous and negative but maybe some of them feel they are being helpful from what they quickly see.

We could think back to the line - If you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all. But we know that doesn't work especially on social and people respond fast without half the information.

So here is another post.

The picture of the left was taken December 10 when I had my first weigh in at Body Rock. The picture on the right was taken April 11 at Fitness Atlantic. I was so embarrassed when I saw my before photo. In that photo I felt so fat, heavy, tired, low self esteem and confidence and always wanting to cover up my body. In the picture on the right, that is the best shape I have ever been in in my entire life. I feel amazing, my self esteem is much higher, I have a lot of energy and I have learned how awesome it feels to eat clean. I have learned how to change my body and what works for me. I can say how much I have changed throughout my 16 week journey. I have lost 22 pounds and also many inches. I could not have gotten there without the amazing guidance and leadership of my coaches Nicole Costa and Kayla Ferenc and the best teammates ever. Listen to your coaches and trust the process! A big thanks to all my family and friends for their support during this time. It was definitely a challenge but it all starts mentally. If you believe it, you can do it! - Katie

So Haters, I respect you. And I hope, after this you will respect us too. If not, that's cool. We will see you in 2023 and revisit the conversation then.
