words of advice...

Published: Tue, 02/21/17

In 2009 I discovered the WBFF in Canada and saw what Paul Dillett was doing... I wasn't

new to running shows since Fitness Atlantic started back in 1999. In 2010 Fitness Atlantic was the first USA WBFF show.

When I called Paul and we spoke for the first time and we really saw the same views on not only how a show should be run but what was happening with Pro fitness careers. That year I drove to Canada to meet with Paul.

During the past week or two I've been seeing so many people on Facebook promoting a Vote For Me to win $20,000 and to be featured in a fitness magazine. On a marketing side I have to give credit

because these types of promos work to get fitness models and athletes to promote the contest

like crazy they also collect a lot of emails.

When I do see promos similar to Vote for Me types I always think it is an easy way out for anyone

promoting themselves - like winning a lottery.

This makes me think back to a powerpoint seminar presentation I gave to the WBFF

Pros back in 2011.

I drove to Canada to attend and judge WBFF Worlds. At the World Championships I gave a seminar.

Usually, I'm a "behind-the-scenes" type of guy so this was different for me.  But, I feel very passionate about helping fitness athletes understand the options they have.

I'm sure (whether you agree with me or not) you will find information you can use from what

I have to say in this seminar.

Important Topics of My Seminar:

1. Document content from your workouts and write 500-1,000 word articles on training and nutrition because article writing is very important. Submit articles to websites and magazines. Most editors don't want just your images alone. If you want to get published write articles.

2. When working with photographers buy and own your images and read the release forms before shooting. Just because someone takes a picture of you does not mean you own it.

3. Start a website with a blog, Facebook fan page, Instagram and youtube channel. The website is your home and has your offers draw people to it.

4. Fitness magazine exposure is good exposure but you won't get paid for that.  Advertise yourself and see exposure as a marketing opportunity to increase your reach.

5. Create a product or service (or train and coach people), write a book, make up a special workout, do something that makes you stand out and make a profit.

6. Supplement companies don't pay much (if anything at all) for athlete "endorsements" but doesn't mean don't shoot for the endorsement contract anyway but working booths isn't really a career. Many people go the route of multi-level supplement companies like Advocare, Isogenics, and Herbalife while others create their own product lines. If you are going to push supplements believe in the products and realize you have to spend time selling supplements. Companies are not just going to pay for your photo use and endorsement.

7. Guest posing and appearances isn't like it used to be unless you can draw a crowd what is your true value? Who really draws attendance? Look at the people who are popular today. Some YouTuber stars draw way more attendance than top bodybuilders and models.

8. The game has changed (re-think your game plan) - even big companies are focused on social media. The perfect example is the Vote-For-Me contest.

9. Competing is good but there can only be one winner - if you have a plan you can't lose as you can market yourself and create fans, customers, and popularity (which should be the end goal for everyone). If a photographer tells you that you don't need to compete to be a fitness model they don't really get it. All athletes in any sport gain fans faster than just models. Give people a reason to care about you.

10. As a team it's better than trying this alone! Team Up! The more sharing of content onto other pages helps. Look at people who do share-for-share on Instagram and how fast they build up sharing followers. Notice how YouTubers show up on each others videos. How can you cross-over and share each others fans and reach more people.

*Photo below is when I drove to Quebec for a WBFF show and first time meeting Paul and talking about the issues with contests and the missed opportunities athletes have. The industry has changed so much since the time Paul was a Pro and as a competitor today to be successful as a career things are different. Social Media didn't exist while Paul was a Pro. Now each person has an opportunity to use social media to create and control their own brand.
