What do you call it

Published: Wed, 02/03/16

I'm headed to New York City this Saturday to speak at a workshop.

I answer any questions any people have on the event.
While I could also speak on any other topics on shows from being in the industry so long.

It is always a pleasure attending this workshop because the girls here are always so open and say it like it is. There is a lot of laughs at this event and the people are amazing.

I will say this flyer looks pretty intense with the guy curling with his shirt off... it's is a cool flyer but the girls on the bottom right could have been front and center as that is who attends this event. I've never seen any guys attend this workshop but maybe there will be this time around?

Last Connecticut workshop we had I worked with the guys on their posing for Fitness Model and Muscle Model.

Here is something to think about and I catch myself saying it too.

Do you call fitness shows Competitions or Contests?

Do you call yourself a Competitor?

Almost all of the people do...

I've been really focusing on making sure I call it a "show" and I call the people in it "contestants" like it's American Idol or something.

I used to call everyone "athletes".

Guess what I'm looking for is the right words so that everyone in a show feels good afterwards?

When you say, "I'm training for a contest." it does sound pretty hardcore and used a lot for bodybuilding. Could make it sound like winning is the only thing and it will end up with a winner and losers.

My goal is to keep building the popularity of our events and sometimes I wonder if normal people who are outside our fitness world bubble understand anything we are talking about? And I mean that in a fun way not to make fun of us for being so into fitness.

Think about it for a minute, "I'm doing a contest." what are you talking about... what contest?
That could be mean anything.

I've also told some people outside the fitness world, for example, the people at the casino when they ask what is this event? I say "Fitness Model Pageant." Sounds kinda whimpy right? But that's for a good reason it as depends on who I'm talking to about the event. I don't want to scare these business people in suits and I even call you "models." Yup that's what I make sure I say.

I don't want to sound like a Planet Fitness commercial but when people say "bodybuilding contest" regular people think steroids. Once I asked the secretary at the other theater what she thought my event was and she said, "A bunch of Arnolds." I was really taken back and asked if she paid any attention.

Way back when I competed (see I said it too), being in a show really changed my life and I've been involved ever since that day. Obviously the shows have changed and evolved so much over the years. Much, much more quality production value and in way better venues then when I did them in high school auditoriums.

At the end of the day you call it what motivates YOU.

My words of advice are use a show, contest, competition or whatever to make YOURSELF a better person afterward.

While my words can get old saying, "There are no losers on stage." How do you explain AFTER the show or contest takes place when people ask you about it that matters. It's like the people on the outside world don't want you to enjoy this and want to see you get upset. Regular people want you to get angry you placed out of the the top ten and not won all these trophies and Pro Cards so they can be happy being out of shape. I've heard so many out-of-shape people say, "I told you not to do that."

This is NEVER a waste of time as YOU will be more fit.

Think about how cool it is to say, "I'm in a show at Mohegan."
What is anyone else doing on Saturday April 9th other than going out to eat or the movies...
that is BIG TIME right there. That is a huge life accomplishment.

I want more people to be part of that!

Glad you are taking part of this journey,

Brian
